I’m afraid to comment or to ask anything more. I’m just still shocked and I’m not sure if I am able to trust my own ears while listening to this.

ps- don’t want to disturb you from watching the video, so I have put my main comment below, after some few first comments.

  1. Please tell me there were other responders that were edited out!!!

  2. LOL. I’ve seen this before. But I am sure if you interview bums on the streets of any country, you’ll get similar answers.

  3. The art of information selection…. funny, indeed. Do you think they couldn’t make a similar montage after interviewing people out there in Moscow? I believe they could, easily

  4. pselby- I think indeed they have edited this video, it’s obvious, you can actually see how the same people are answering different questions although obviously they were asked the same ones, means that some of them answered correctly so they were not shown.
bApHoMEt- I totally agree with you, it’s just when some bright proof is laid on top of a common prejudice it looks striking.
Vladimir Zakharov- well I honestly believe if you ask a person on the street of Moscow where Iran is they won’t point to Australia.
Although we are not talking about people on the streets of Moscow, I would be happy to admit , that yes, this kind of video about russians would come out as pretty interesting one, still I strongly doubt it would be about geographical ignorance. More than that, I am afraid it would be hardly understood by anybody not russian and saying this I’m not talking about language barrier.

  5. But still I would like to go on with my comments, as it could sound strange but I spent about 24 hours just thinking over this video.
First of all, I believe and more than that I just simply know there are very intelligent people over there in the States. I’m lucky enough to know such people. I think they just simply don’t walk on the streets and it’s not that easy to catch them on the video.
Secondly, it looks like the society in the states is very segregated. Those who know where Iran is and how North Korea looks on a map don’t really live next door to those who think that Berlin wall was in Israel. Well at least, I believe they are not being in constant contact with each other. Whilst, if we talked about Russia( as some people prefer here;) ) I would say that due to some period of communism in that country people who couldn’t read properly were literally living in the same flat or block ( communal flats) with those who were writing books for the future science. And due to the specific society style they had to communicate. This way you can meet a person here who finished school only half-way, worked all the time more with hands and not with his head but still knows how to get pure spirits from deadly poisonous one following the laws of chemistry. And by the way here comes
the third point- the life of Americans is just safe, I wouldn’t want to say “too safe” as this way I wouldn’t be understood well, but it’s definitely safe enough to survive knowing the minimum, safe and comfortable. Of course they wouldn’t know how to get pure alcohol from a deadly technic mixture, but why would they need to??? They were always able just to go to a store and get some normal vodka:) While here in Russia some time ago people had to be brainy enough to get such “delicious” 🙂
and the forth one then– as far as I know the system of education in the states is really very different. Thus the idea of being highly educated in one sphere and not being interested in others is preferred. I mean if you clean trays in McDonalds you are supposed to clean them perfectly and no one cares if you know what religion they have in Israel. The thing is and here come
the fifth and last idea so far- what if such a person becomes the president of a whole country with strong military power and this way or another he is in charge of all external politics? Now THAT is what I find quite dangerous.

  6. I’m not sure whether I can agree with your fourth point… American colleges often offer a much wider variety of courses for a student to take than for example in my own country, the Netherlands. Here, after high school, you take a certain direction of study from which it is very hard to take subjects in any other field. By contrast, such specialization in the US in general only starts taking place in later years of college and in particular only at graduate level.

  7. @Zalexandra: It looks like you’ve spent more than 24 hours thinking about the video ;P

I agree with your on your points 1,2,3 and 5. About the 4th point –

The quality of American public schools vary quite a bit from place to place. My baby sister in 4th grade knows more things about everything than I did back in school. She goes to a school near where I stay. But there are some cousins of mine going to school somewhere else who are quite dumb when it comes to stuff they learn at school. they are quite intelligent otherwise.

p.s. Your 5th point is a dangerous situation. But when you think about it, it’s already happened. Twice. 😉

  8. bartwoord, thanks for your comment. The point you made is quite interesting. The thing is here in Russia there is a firm opinion of American education as being quite weak. I guess comparing to Russian it probably is ( poor kids study purely everything here, egg. several languages and myths of different nations), but still it doesn’t necessarily make an American style of education weak. But still then there would be a question, how come some Americans think Europe is a country( from another video I don’t find interesting to post here)?
bApHoMEt, thanks for information too. That made me think even more( probably will take another 24 hours 😉 ). I wonder if there is a state dictated educational plan for schools? Or any school is free to chose subjects and system they prefer to follow?
